Stephen Scott Track 01

Stephen Scott Track 01

This song is what we used in our opening sequence which was written by Stephen Scott. We used this song as it was slow, creepy and mysterious just like our film so it fitted well within our genre and the type of film we were aiming for.

Danielle Feaver - DVD Cover (Back & Spine)

This is the back and the spine of the DVD cover. I created this on power point and edited the pictures to make them look more creepy and mysterious on picnik (www.picnik.com - this website closes on the 19th april 2012 and moves to google +).
The image had to be re-sized to put on blogger and it had to be edited with a lower quality therefore it hasn't come out as good as it could of done.

Voice Over for Opening Sequence

Voice over

This link to a recording of our voice over is the last part of the film which creates more meaning and suspense to the horror and as it ends it puts everyone on edge.

Danielle's Transition Research

Danielle's Contribution To Editing

I did some of the transitions myself some being fade to white and some being fade to black. Alongside working with Emma Brice we shortened the film overall because it was timed at over 3 minutes and it was too long. After a couple of hours working we shortened the film and put more transitions in being fade to black, fade to whites and just general cuts.
We also switched one of the scenes around because it collided with another scene and you could see that it was filmed at a different point, we found this worked because it made the production look more realistic.

When we finally completed our opening sequence we realized that we didn’t have any general conversation or anyone talking throughout, this made us decide that it was more appropriate if we did and it would make things clearer on what was happening. As a group we decided to do a voice over and it was shortly written by Emma Brice and Liam Jeffery and actually spoken by (acted by) Alex Oakley. We decided to do the short script as:
“Sometimes you’ve just got to change your plans…Guess it’s my lucky day”.
We found that this was appropriate because as a viewer you could see what was going through the antagonists head.

After the voice over was created we did our final piece of music. We found that it didn’t quite suit what we was looking for. We decided as a group that we would get someone else to make the music for our film. Stephen Scott who has a band made us our music for our film. He has a number of tracks located on a disk that we could chose from we went for a track that seemed more appropriate for our film. In a way it comes across and mysterious and creepy and that was exactly what we was looking for.

Voice Over Analysis

For our Opening sequence we have added in a voice over for one of our main characters in the film. We have added this to create meaning and purpose for the character as to what he is going to do in the film and also to make the film more clear and understandable to the viewer. When we watched our film we realised how it was missing this important piece to finish the film and have now noticed how it makes a great difference to the ending and creates more tension and purpose to the film.

The Voice over was acted by myself and written by Emma Brice and Liam Jeffery.

Distribution and Audience - Facebook and Twitter

Twitter page for LEAD Productions - https://twitter.com/#!/LEADProductions
Facebook page for LEAD Productions - http://www.facebook.com/LeadProductions
Facebook page for the film 'The Platform' - http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Platform/380160728669256?skip_nax_wizard=true

As a group we decided to create a Twitter and Facebook page for our production company, LEAD Productions. We agreed this was a great way to use cross media convergence and attract our audience. Our film is aimed at any gender and any age above 15 meaning there is a wide audience, so we needed a variety of different ways to advertise and distribute our film and production company. Using the internet is modern use with many people joining and regularly using websites such as Twitter and Facebook, so making pages for these sites allows our audience and fans to keep up with any film news. Furthermore by using a variety of different ways to attract an audience means the larger the audience will be and lead to small production companies making a larger profit if we are advertising and distributing through the internet. We created a Facebook page for both our production company and film so that our audience and fans can see recent news on both the film and the production company.

Emma - Editing

When we completed filming our opening sequence we used editing to make our film more interesting and appropriate to our genre of horror/thriller.
Our film doesn't include any conversation and we realised it wouldn’t be clear what was happening, therefore we added a narration. We thought this would be effective as it subtly tells the audience what is going on that the antagonist has chosen a random victim and is following her. We interestingly made the narration from the villain’s perspective as this contrasts other horror/thriller films as generally the narration is of the protagonist. Our narration made the opening sequence much more gripping and interesting as the audience could follow what was happening and it makes them want to know what will happen but also see from the antagonists’ point of view and see what’s going through his head.

Map For Main Scene

Credit List

For our film we have created a create list which occurs during our opening sequence of the film, our credit list consists of:

  • Written by: Alex Oakley, Danielle Feaver, Emma Brice and Liam Jeffery

  • Produced by: Alex Oakley, Danielle Feaver, Emma Brice and Liam Jeffery

  • Edited by: Alex Oakley, Danieille Feaver, Emma Brice and Liam Jeffery

  • Actors: Emma Brice and Alex Oakley

  • Music: Alex Oakley

From this credit list you can see that as a group we have all be involved in it and all had our even share into making the film into what it is at the moment.

Liam's Editing

Editing is a key part to a film it can make a average film into a movie blockbusters. I did a lot of research on how to edit on Adobe. TV, I used the help manual and also video clips on youtube showing how to use different types of editing and effects on your movie. This research helped as it improved my knowledge on adobe and on editing, I then began to play around on adobe with the knowledge I already had and get used to what there was to use and try new things and after a few hours practising I moved onto editing our film.

One effect of editing I used on my film was a fade to black. A fade to black between a change in two different sections of the films added a sinister effect to it and gave it a continous effect with no stop starts or jumps.

Also with my film i used lighting to add an effect and create the characters' personalities. I made the film dark in stages where the antagonist was to show he is a dark, mean character and is one to keep away from. Where we cross cut between the antagonist and the girl, i made the scenes with the girl alone in lighter to show her innocence and how vunerable she is. When the antagonist, this creepy old man, walks through the carrages of the train i made the darkness follow him to show this has meaning and he is up to no good.

Film Poster

This is a poster that i designed. Overall the poster doesn't seem as if it has anything to do with the title of the film but by researching other posters many films also have this. I think this is effective because of the red writing which is eye catching from the knife placed in the middle. I edited this photo on picnik using the black and white effect, the 'gritty' effect and a black blurred and faded border.

Risk Assessment

When planning our filming for our main task we assessed the risks that could affect the health and safety of the four of us filming as well as others around us. Part of the filming took place on a train which meant we had to respect the commuters around us by being sensible and not get in anyone's way. We had to be careful getting safely and sensibly on the train as well as taking care of the tripod and camera. Furthermore when filming we had to place the tripod in a sensible place so that we were not disturbing commuters around us when getting on and off the train making sure nobody fell over any equipment. For the rest of our film we filmed in a garage and kitchen using a knife and matches. When using the matches to set alight the paper that said 'Lead Productions', we made sure everyone was standing clear of the match so that nobody's clothes caught fire and also made sure that when the paper was set alight it didn't set light/ burn any surrounding objects or hands. Finally we used a knife in our production and one of our shots was to drop it a counter to the floor. During this everyone stood well back so that it wouldn't hit the ground awkwardly and bounce up and hit anyone or anyone's feet. We also made sure the camera and tripod were in a safe position far enough away from the knife so that we could still film without the knife damaging any of the equipment.

Our Age Rating

The BFCC class the age rating of 15 as the fact violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable. Strong sadistic or sexualised violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification.

What is the age rating for our film and why?
The age rating for our film is a 15. Our main reason for this is because it involves murder, blood and gore. Our film involves the elements of violence and may come disturbing to people under 15. Therefore then film should be rated as 15 and over. If we were to make the rest of the film then we would be aiming for a target audience that would mainly be the younger generation of people who enjoy films with a plot line like ours but also it applies to older people who enjoy horror and thriller films.

Why do we need to know our target Audience?
By knowing the age range of our target audience lets us know how far we can go with certain events in the film without having to worry about the younger generation. Overall it gives us ideas on how we can attract our viewers for example what to use on the poster advertisement, on the DVD cover etc. We would know what kind of elements to include to attract our target audience. By knowing our target audience we can simplify our decisions by knowing that we have to relate it to our target market.

Shot Analysis

For our opening sequence we decided to use some classic shots that would typically be used in the horror/thriller genre. To show the location (beyond the obvious train station) we used an establishing shot. This shows the viewer the details of the area around from where our characters are. The shot isn’t too detailed as it shows a large area of land.

This is an example of an establishing shot we have used this shot in our opening sequence.

Another shot that we used was an extreme close up. A reason for this is to show the viewer the event in the shot in detail therefore they can easily analyze what’s going on in the sequence. This shot was used a number of times. For example it was used with the plug hole. This gives the scene a good effect because it then fades to black and goes on to a completely different scene. The basic fade to black effect was used to give the audience a moment to take in all that they have seen before the other scene starts. This is an effective moment because the two scenes are completely different to each other.

This is an example of an extreme close up, this is like the close up that we have used in our opening sequence of an eye.

This is an example of the over the shoulder shot, we have used this in our opening sequence.

We used the panning movement in the medium shot when on the train. A reason for this is because of the fact the viewer needed to know what way the stalker (Gary) is walking. The camera panning effect also this gives the viewer a basic view of the surrounding area. In our case it’s the surrounding area of the train and the passengers.

Genre Choice

When our group started thinking about the whole production in general, our first decision was what genre we were going to base our opening sequence on. Our first idea was to use the ‘Comedy’ genre a reason for this was the fact we could easily think the number of story lines we could do. The reason we didn’t do this genre because we didn’t know how to film certain things and what our specific target audience would like to see. After debating that idea we thought of basing our production on a horror/thriller genre. Our reasons being were once again because we could think of many story ideas. The attraction of a horror or thriller film is the fact they are mysterious and plan to shock the viewers. We thought this would be a good idea for our opening sequence because we could experiment ways that we could shock the viewer ourselves. We did a lot of research before finally deciding on the genre such as looking at previous films analysing how certain things are done such as camera shots and credits at the start. Overall at the end we decided as a group to do horror/thriller.

Typical Horror Genre

Wikipedia states a horror film in general as something that "seeks to elicit a negative emotional reaction from it's viewers by playing on the audiences minds and their fears". They feature events that come to the viewers as a shock. The horror genre frequently overlaps wtith the thriller genre. In the case of our film it's based with both the horror and thriller genre. The typical horror film is written with a plot of an evil force, event or person. They can occasionally be based around ghosts, torture, werewolves, curses, serial killers etc. Things like this are the viewers primal fears and come across as suprise and startle them. Horror films intend to frighten it's readers it creates an eerie atmosphere that can rather be natural or supernatural.

We've based our film on the genres horror/thriller because of the fact we have ideas that could startle our viewers. Our storyline comes across as things that can happen within a natural life. The characters involved within our film the viewers can relate to. For example there is a 16 year old girl being taken by a psychopath man. An older person with children can relate to that because if their child was taken they would feel upset, angry and would want them back therefore they can relate to the parents of the child because they would understand the position that they were in.
